From the St. Petersburg Times:
When Charlie Paxton of the National Weather Service Office in Ruskin saw this cloud formation he knew he would be questioned about it. Ready for a little science? Here's the answer: "This forms when cirro-cumulous clouds composed of super cooled liquid water below fereezing are affected by airplane exhause. Interestingly, the supercooled water clouds remain liquid even though temperatures may be well below freezing until contact with a condensation nuclei or small particulate. In this case aircraft exhaust came in contact with the supercooled cloud around 26,000 feet at a temperature around -11 degrees Fahrenheit, causing the liquid to become ice crystal cirrus clouds creating a hole in the cloud
I took the two pictures below on 34th St. in St. Petersburg Florida on Nov. 24, 2005
